Both use a 91.0 mm bore.

The 4D55 uses a 90.0mm stroke.
The 4D56 uses a 95.0mm stroke.

It seems to me that I can buy a 4D55 here in the states and simply import the crank, rods, pistons...

The ONLY 4D56 I've see on eBay cost US$2500. It included an automatic transmission and transfer case. Messaged the seller and he'd cut me the amazing deal of US$2100 for just the engine alone. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

That seems a little more than I want to pay for a used, condition unknown engine...

Importing parts also will probably be cheaper seeing as how the block weighs quite a bit and takes up a lot of space.

Should I look into getting specific year parts? Perhaps one year has a better injection pump or something?

I want to use the distributor type injection pump rather than a common rail diesel.

I also spoke with this seller and he offered me the same deal.

I don't understand why people want so much cash for used stuff.

Get this. I talked with a guy in Virginia. He has a 4D55 non-running for $800. First thing this guy says to me is that truck has been sitting here for five or six years. Its up to be crushed, but if you want it I'll sell you the engine and tranny for $800 each.

WHAT!?! I can get a rebuilt tranny for a 4x4 for $500. And if its up to be crushed why would he ask $800 for a NON-RUNNING engine. I could be buying a bad core and be out the $800. If it was my yard and vehicle I would say hey, I'm gonna crush that old junker. Give me $200 for the parts and $100 for my labor to pull it and you can have the whole drivetrain.

I mean really. This guy is going to pass up making afew hundred bucks to crush the car for what, $75 in scrap metal??

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!???

Pele if you want the motor feel free to call this Dink at 1-800-332-4678 English Motors Yorktown Virginia.

Greedy bastard.

Coulda sworn I replied to this already.

Not for $800... I'll wait for one to show up in the yard I go to that sells engines for $150

Besides, I have to wait for a few replies to see if I really want the 4D55 block. I want to end up with a 4D56.

From what i've read you can swap a 4d56 head and turbo setup onto the 4d55 block no prob. bolt on man that will give you a bit of extra boost you got a pickup up right? I'd innercool the thing as well.

But can I swap in the crank and pistons so that I get that extra .2L of displacement?

Or are the cylinder bores too short to support that extra 5mm of stroke?

I have a pickup... It's not a Mitsu though. It's a Mazda, originally equipped with a Mitsubishi 4G54 engine.

Bump

The toolbags on eBay can't tell me what year or model vehicle the engine came from or how many kilometers were on the vehicle when the engine was removed.

They just say it's from a late model vehicle with 50,000-60,000 KM on it.

Their description of the enigne is cut and pasted from Wikipedia... Their photos for multiple engines are of the same engine.

This is unacceptable.

If I can't get a 4D56 that has even a little bit of info on it, I need to look into building my own.

You guys want to know the truth..... All that import stuff is junk. It is wsorn out. I bought a 4d56 imported with supposidley only 50,000-60,000 miles. (I have a policy, I never install used engines without inspecting them. So I thought I would at least dismantle it and clean it, mic everything and put all new gaskets. Spun bearings, worn cylinders you name it. I had to rebuild the whole engine. The 4d55 pistons are the same as the rings almost all gaskets etc. I would always inspect the oil pumps real well. They are noturios for bad step wear in the case if the oil was not changed often. Mitsubishi is the only place to get oil pumps. Once you find a 4d56 let me know. I'll help you get all the parts. All I used from the 4d56t was the block and crank and rods. I used all my 4d55 accessories including head because it was still fresh

Right, which is why I wonder how they can justify charging close to $3000 on eBay for them...

Well, I guess it explains why they haven't sold.

It seems everyone has them for that price though. Dieselhead.net has the same engine for the same price.

What gives? Nobody has this engine for less? I'd be willing to have less history and less info necessary on the engine if I wasn't paying as much.

Hell, I'll take one with that someone has shown to have no compression for less than a grand.

ALL diesel engines are expensive. Try pricing out a high-mileage Cummins 4B out of an old UPS truck. My buddy found one and considered it for a transplant into a toyota 4x4 he is building. He gave up due to the cost and weight - and he's a Cummins mechanic. I think it's the percieved durability of the diesel, as well as the lower production numbers that keeps values high.

yes all diesel engines are expensive...$2500 for a low mileage JDM engine is actually DIRT cheap. look at brand new dodge cummins trucks....It is $10,000more for a diesel truck as opposed to the exact same truck with a gas.
