Getting the Wheeling Fever

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum, but I thought someone out there might have an idea of what we can do with this gutless car, which is in all other ways a gem. My favourite girl has a 4-wheel drive 1990 Camry with a 2000 4-cyl engine. Can this engine be swapped out for a 6 cyl. Toyota engine economically, or can/should we soup up the original engine in it, which is due for a overhaul? Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

Whats your idea of economically? Everything would have to be changed over, engine, trans, wiring, etc. A shop would charge probably 4 or 5 grand to do the swap. maybe more.
I'd just rebuild the 5sfe that you have in there, and call it good.

This car has an automatic transmission. We're thinking about spending 2 - 3 thousand dollars, with me doing most of the work. Are there any things that we can do with the original engine to increase the horse power with this amount of money, including an overhaul? Any links you can recommend?
