Well Landraider, go and price some genuine factory Tojo or Nissan gearsets.
The Mitsi gearsets are on the lower end of the scale.
Tojo & Nissan factory gearsets run around the $900 Oz mark each at dealers over here. I get a good price as I've bought numerous sets off the importer - I get them basically for trade price which is only about 10% lower than what Mitsi would sell them for (not a big margin in these).
Sure there are aftermarket Precision gears etc but it has been demonstartaed time & time again that they are inferior.
The aftermarket fronts are ok as they are barely used but the rears have worn out as early as 20K's with 40-60K's being considered good. Over here most Tojo/Nissan people go genuine rear (if the ratio is available from the factory) and aftermarket front.
And in any event no-one makes aftermrket Mitsi gears anyway so we are stuck with the factory ratio's/sets.
If you really want them it's the only option you have - buy new or source from a wrecker. The 5.29's have all but dried up from wrecking yards over here and are only available new (ex Japan).
If everyone had your attitude ARB would be out of business.............

Hey man!! Not a personal attack. I'm just telling the people MY opinion on gear prices!!! I KNOW!!!! they are rare, and mitsu only makes them. I understand!! I really do. Those are just out of my pricerange!! I'm sure ANY factory gearset costs alot. and I'm not going to buy them either!

If everyone had my attitude, ARB would be doing fine. They'd be selling lots of lockers for vehicles that are popular, and axles that are popular.....Just like they do now. I'm sincerely glad that ARB made a locker for the fron of the IFS trucks. I really am.

I guess I'm just thrifty is all. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
