Getting the Wheeling Fever
He gave me a rough estimate of $700 per end ($1400 per vehicle) plus shipping. He is going to check into the exact price and let me know (I don't think he sells these every day).

JUST an FYI

Gears should cost around 150-200 per set. I know these are special ones that are Mitsu made, and mitsu specific, but I personally would not ever pay that much.

Well Landraider, go and price some genuine factory Tojo or Nissan gearsets.
The Mitsi gearsets are on the lower end of the scale.
Tojo & Nissan factory gearsets run around the $900 Oz mark each at dealers over here. I get a good price as I've bought numerous sets off the importer - I get them basically for trade price which is only about 10% lower than what Mitsi would sell them for (not a big margin in these).
Sure there are aftermarket Precision gears etc but it has been demonstartaed time & time again that they are inferior.
The aftermarket fronts are ok as they are barely used but the rears have worn out as early as 20K's with 40-60K's being considered good. Over here most Tojo/Nissan people go genuine rear (if the ratio is available from the factory) and aftermarket front.
And in any event no-one makes aftermrket Mitsi gears anyway so we are stuck with the factory ratio's/sets.
If you really want them it's the only option you have - buy new or source from a wrecker. The 5.29's have all but dried up from wrecking yards over here and are only available new (ex Japan).
If everyone had your attitude ARB would be out of business.............

I just luv my "clacker Jabber".................

Hey man!! Not a personal attack. I'm just telling the people MY opinion on gear prices!!! I KNOW!!!! they are rare, and mitsu only makes them. I understand!! I really do. Those are just out of my pricerange!! I'm sure ANY factory gearset costs alot. and I'm not going to buy them either!

If everyone had my attitude, ARB would be doing fine. They'd be selling lots of lockers for vehicles that are popular, and axles that are popular.....Just like they do now. I'm sincerely glad that ARB made a locker for the fron of the IFS trucks. I really am.

I guess I'm just thrifty is all.

For what it's worth, here's how I see it.

I considered getting a Jeep Rubicon, what do they run now? At least 25k new, 15k used (or something like that). So, I can put lower dif's and lockers in my raider and save over 10 grand. That seems economical to me.

I'm not a teenager any more, and I don't enjoy spending hours and hours working on my cars. That's one reason I like Japanese vehicles, for their reliability. I'm happy to pay for parts that will fit perfectly and work reliably.

Or, put in a more offensive way, I have no interest in a conglomeration of parts that don't quite fit together; and make a vehicle that likely has problems with reliability and handling at highway speed. Or, at least it would if it weren't only 80% complete.

As I stated before!!! This was not intended as a personal attack on anyone!!! Just my observation from working in the gear industry.

I like Japanese vehicles too. I just don't like working on them.

BUT I'm glad you feel that way. My Parts HAPPEN to all fit together very nicely. You're more that welcome to have a look see. I don't really see where you think it is unreliable? And it handles fine. Actually I would be willing to bet it will handle as well as any "cranked torsion bars" gen 1 out there with the equivalent size tires. And finally... to the 80% complete comment you made. Well... you see My truck is 100% capable and complete at this second. My signature is only meant to reflect how many parts on it are not stock.

I'll be more than happy to pace you on the interstate, or the worst trail you would like to run. I'll even run cones with you. SCCA here we come. Basically my truck will outperform yours in just about any way you can think of. Except maybe road noise

I guess what I'm trying to say is that If you're gonna bash my truck at least have an INKLING knowledge about it.

AND about your gears.. I sincerely hope you get them, have a successful install, and enjoy them!! I know I would.

There's no doubt yours will outperform mine off road. But, youÆre on for the next autocross.

Let's see, I'm in Seattle, so if we meet halfway that would be about Denver. So, how about this event in Colorado Springs on Feb 18th?

Think theyÆll let us compete?

Guys, guys!! It's the same as the Ford/Chevy argument. I like to summarize that as "Dodge, built Ford tough with Chevy parts" and since I drive a Mitsubishi Dodge, it's almost absolutely true. Take the Aussie's and New Zealanders, they replace the drivetrain in Jeeps with locally available parts. TheSewdish guys use bottle fed big blocks with Volvo/Puch/Sachs portal axles or Unimog pieces. We aren't the only folks practicing modification to 'make' our vehicles suitable for the terrain we like to traverse.

I like the Raider because it is bigger than a Samurai and smaller than a Ramcharger. I would own either if these other vehicles, but my Raider is a daily driver that holds almost everything I need for work on that daily basis. I do need a 1-ton 4x4 service truck though, that way I can have the Dana 60/70 combo with big 36" tires and a healthy big block that sucks gas but holds ALL my tools and can tow the Raider at the same time. My 4x4 use, obviously, is work related.

I'd swap my red 87 Montero and $$ for front/rear sets of 4-cylinder 5.29 gears, that way I could set the Raider up to go offroading with the 33s on trails that 4xMonty would like to see me on. Still, the Raider would be my daily driver, work truck, and fun truck.

OK.

Keep in mind my truck has a solid axle in the front with a huge antisway bar, and fairly stiff leafs all the way around. I'm sure we'd get laughed off he auto X track, but hey...
