Hey guys, I am posting on the truck side now because I am the proud owner of a 1993 standard cab pickup w/ a 22RE and Manual Trans. Best part is I traded it for a $250.00 modular ladder. Good friend. Anyways it has 99,250 miles on it and he had to park it about a month ago because it cut out on him. I just towed it home todays and took a look and the valve cover is off and the rocker assmbly is off. My friend said a mechanic said that "a rod may have busted or hit the piston". I know when it was running it sounded like it had some timing issues, sounded like it was sluggish almost like the the timing need adjustment. I was wondering what steps should I take to find the problem and fixing it or if a rebuild is in order and how difficult would it be to do the work myself. Thanks for the help guys!

Just a reminder there *is* a 1993 FSM sticky'd at the top here.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hope you don't piss your friend off to bad when you get the truck running for peanuts. I atleast wouldn't ask him if he wants to ride in it unless it's a bucket.

He tried to get the thing running, but he has no patience, or $. But he is happy for me because I always wanted my own 22RE smile

Roll Me Over
If you have done any work on teh 3.0. rebuilding a 22r is a breeze. I think rebuilding teh 22r is easier than changing the #5 plug on the 3.0, certainly less frustrating.

I would say since you have a basic diagnosis, and the engine is already partially torn down, I would go ahead and pull the head along with the oil pan. If the block and crankshaft are fine, you can rebuild it in the vehicle. It will be easier to remove the oil pan if you remove the front 3rd member first. Rebuilding it should run you under $400(get your stuff through enginebuilder.com), you might also consider getting the fuel injectors cleaned and rebuilt, usually runs about $30/injectror.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
