they are interchangeable unless you have an IFS front suspension.

Yep, front diff runs in reverse going forward. Put it in back and it'll run forward.

Firstly, it'll run backwards (in either axle).
Secondly, won't oil properly, nothing to sling/pump oil up the the high pinion gear, you'll need to overfill the axle to keep it oiled.

Turning the third over is easy its getting the pinion offset to move to the other side of the ring gear so you can flip the carrier. The casting just wont work due to the pinion offset.
