In the mean time, here's a can-o-worms question: which engine is 'better': The SOHC or DOHC?

I'm getting on average 325-350 miles per fill up. Which the fill-up typically is around 20 gallons. Everyone, claims that you get worse mileage with a larger tires & lift...mine has remained the same if not improved a little. I'm running 34" tires and 3 inches of lift.

That being said about every 12-18 months my mileage will dive by 100 miles per fill up. This is easily solved by plugs and wires. Only use factory wires and either NGK or Denso plugs, they make a huge difference. You may also need to look into new coil packs, I had one that was going bad and resulted in really bad mileage.

Unless you have an LS with the 5sp, then its SOHC.

On the mileage, I normally burn 17 gallons before I get a fuel warning light. I'd expect you to get atleat 210 miles off the 17 gallons. that's real close to 14 MPG minimum. If you are below that, I really think you have an issue.

YEP YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE 95 I FORGOT ABOUT THAT YEAR THAT WAS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE SOHC CHANGE OVER TO THE SOHC ON THE 4DOOR , THE RS STILL HAD THE DOHC AND THE LIMITED HAD THE DOHC, BUT ONLY WITH AN AUTOMATIC THE RS IF YOU COULD FIND ONE COULD HAVE HAD EITHER , THE DOHC DIDNT DRIVE VERY GOOD IN TRAFFIC WITH THE 5 SPD , IT WAS TO EASY TO STALL THE ENG WITH A LITTLE CLUTCH ACTION BUT THE SOHC DROVE FINE ..SO 94 WAS THE LAST YEAR OF THE DOHC LS STICK AND AUTOMATIC,, JERRY

OVERALL OFF ROADING THE SOHC IS A BETTER ENG,AS IT PRODUCES MORE TORQUE AT A LOWER RPM THAN THE DOHC, MUCH EASIER TO DRIVE ESP WITH MANUAL TRANS , AN AUTO WORKS VERY WELL , ON THE HI WAY THE DOHC IS FAR AND AWAY AS FAR AS THE ACCELARATION GOES IN THE UPPER RPM RANGES ,I AM REFERING ONLY TO THE 95 AND EARLIER ENGS , WHICH IS THE BETTER ENG ?, THE DOHC HAS LESS MOVING PARTS THAN THE SOHC BE CAUSE OF THE CYL HEAD DESIGN, NO ROCKER ARMS ,NO ROCKER SHAFTS , DIFF DESIGN HYD LIFTERS , HAS CAM FOLLOWERS , BUT IT ALLSO HAS TWO TIMING CHAINS, ONE TIMING BELT AND THREE TENSIONERS ONE FOR EACH CHAIN AND ONE FOR THE BELT , THE DOHC SEEMS TO RUN LONGER BUT THAT ISNT TO SAY THE SOHC OR THE DOHC IS SUPERIOR , DEPENDS ON THE MAINTANENCE ,THEY ARE BOTH VERY DURABLE ENGS , THE 96-97 SOHC ENGS MADE THE SAME AMOUNT OF POWER AS THE EARLY DOHC ENG BUT AT A LOWER RPM AND IT MADE FOR A VERY NICE DRIVING HEAVY TRUCK .. So, I finally have some hard numbers to back up my suspicion.

I filled my tank, drove 177 city miles, and refilled the tank. It took 18.2 gallons. That works out to 9.2 miles to the gallon, if I'm not mistaken.

I am having the same issue with my 90 trooper. I fill up and it will go about 200 miles to empty. Who knows the size tank for a 90 trooper?

Having read this thread, and being a new '98 Rodeo owner (with the 3.2L V6 and Auto tranny), I decided to check my mileage too. Over three recent fill-ups, I'm getting 14.5 - 15.2 MPG avg - mix of city/hwy driving. I think I've got taller gearing than stock, and my truck has 33s and is lifted. So I guess I should think this isn't too bad.

I've got no idea why your mileage would be so bad - maybe a full tune-up would help? or maybe your truck has had some very tall gears installed? One other idea - can you verify your tranny hits 4th gear (OD) on the highway?
