Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey guys I was wondering if there is a code under the hood or some other way to tell what year and model of trooper has the 477's. I want to go to the junkyards and look around for some stuff, and want to know how to identify them. Also, I am wanting to trade out the manual 5 speed for an automatic and was wondering how good the auto is that came in the troopers. Or is there another tranny that is better that will bolt up. My understanding is that I need to get a transfer case from an auto too as my transfercase wont bolt up to an auto am I correct on this?

A search in the Isuzu forums using keywords: +trooper +4.77 +code came up with THIS thread.

The 5-speeds have an integrated t-case; meaning its actually 'part' of the tranny. The autos have a divorced case, meaning they are bolted to the tranny but are their own entity and can be removed. So, yes, you will need the t-case as well if going to an auto.

and there is also this current thread which is still on the main page.

(in other words, this is a common topic and a search should bring up plenty of info)

the default search on these boards is an OR search. meanign, if you type "trooper 4.77" is going to bring up results with "trooper" or "4.77". In most cases, you only want to see results contain all of your search words... adding the + forces an AND search... you'll matches that contain both "trooper" and "4.77"
