Need a Spot
I am looking for some advice and help here. I just bought a 91 4runner with a 22re. I have been looking for the 22re and 5 spd for a while. Here is the issue.

Noise coming from the engine. Not sure what it is, I do hear one value making noise, hopping it came be adjusted out. But there is another rattling sound. My guess is it is the beginning of the end to the timing chain. Truck still runs, but I don't want to do any major damage to the engine. The truck has 202k miles.

So what to do? Do I attempt to do a timing chain replacement, and hope that solves the problem. I do not want to spend alot of money on it if I can avoid it.

Any Help?

Check that the valve cover nuts are not too tight as it is possible for the valve train to hit the valve cover if they are. You can also pull the valve cover and check the timing chain slop.

I have 86 with over 200k mi , it made a lot of noise when I got it ,sounded like a diesel.I put in a timing chain kit from EB and adjusted the valves. That cleared 90% of my noise ,you might as well do the oil pump and water pump too while you got em off IMHO

Roll Me Over
Since you don't have the service history of the vehicle, I would pull the valve cover and check the timing chain and check/adjust the valves. This is an easy way to eliminate them, and it will take only take you all of about 2hrs(depending on how fast you move). The FSM at the top of the forum will give you the info you need.

If this is your first fuel injected Toyota truck, they do tend to have noisy injectors, whicih can/do make a tapping noise.

Do keep in mind this IS an interference engine; if the timing chain goes, you have the possibility of clanging a valve.
