<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/sleeping.gif" alt="" /> ok back on topic my 94 pickup had 269k on it original motor and i started gettin water in the oil. so thinkin that i had blown a head gasket or worpt the head i took it apart had the head rebuilt and machined, replaced the gaskets put it back together and it still was getting water in the oil. so i figured it must be a cracked block and i replaced the engine. after gettin the truck up and running again i herd about how the plastic guides for the TC have a habit of breaking and sure enough when i took the old motor apart the guides were gone and the chain rubbed right through into the water pump. WISH I KNEW THAT EARLIER <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> --- DOUG I made a new MAN LAW. You are not allowed to call back on topic when it's not your thread. I'm sorry you had a bad experience but what does that have to do with chain failures or bent valves or anything else in this thread?

The OT was in reference to shop rates, etc.
His own experience also had to do with a botched TC job.
A LOT of people here thought they've had bad HG's, still had leaks, only to discover their TC covers were eaten thru.
Nuff said.

Use to have '88 4x4 PU when timing chain bore hole on cover and water got in the engine. This was before I knew about infamous timing chain reputation. Living paycheck to payckeck at the time so stupidly drove it too long before having it fixed (hard lesson learned). Eventually engine went bad after hitting 200,000 mi and sold it to buy '84 4runner (which I "fankensteined" it to feul injection unsuccessfully). Now have '85 4runner and keeping an "eye" at the timing chain problem.

Portland OR At first when I read your post I though, "what's the dif?", we're just one big happy family and the 22R is juct a chip off of the old block, so to speak. But now I'm trying to remember if 20R's were all equipped with double row chains? Might make a big difference in the failure rate! -- Matt
