Well, for $3K, you can do quite a bit... But you don't need to, really.
Roger has some great comments about how to fit 33's w/o much of a lift. Others recommend the ball joint spacers and 1" body lift because that also works. It really comes down to what you want from your truck.
If I were building another IFS truck, I would likely do one of two things.
1; Downey IFS kit with the uber-duty-Porsche CV's, ball-joint spacers and 33's. This idea has problems, I'll admit, and I haven't figured out how to get around them just yet.
The second, better model, would be to go back to the Superlift 4" kit that I already have experience with. In the past, I've run Rancho, TrailMaster and SL and much prefer the SL. With some minor mods, you can get a great amount of travel from this kit, and in it's "stock" form, it will increase travel a couple of inches due to the design of the drop brackets relative to the bump stops. It's a well designed kit, IMHO and gave me no troubles.
Once that was installed, I'd likely pick up a Pro-comp front skid plate and make some "lateral compression" struts like the pro-comp stage-II just for some added protection. I don't view them as necessities, and I would definitely worry about the skid plate more than the struts.
For the rear, I'd go with Skyjacker 4" rear springs. They are an okay spring for an "off-the-shelf" unit and don't require welding.
I'd replace the cheap shocks with appropriately sized Bilsteins.
That should run you about $1000-1200, I would guess. Invest in gears (4.88's for 33's and 5.29's for 35's) for another $1K and enjoy...
