Getting the Wheeling Fever

My Gen I is backfiring when I let off the gas at high speeds. It is also doing that "...wants to keep running" thing when you turn off the ignition. I have checked the timeing and it shows to be right on. What other things can I do to resolve these issues. Thanks guys.
