Tires for '96 4Runner on stock rims #783387 01/25/07 08:47 PM

Just acquired '96 4Runner SR-5, any opinions on best tires for stock 16" X 8" aluminum rims? I off-road 25%, highway 50%, and street 25%. Have owned BFG's A/T on a Land Cruiser, but they are now very pricey...any alternatives?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I had Michelin Cross Terrain tires (pricey, but worth it) on my 98' Runner and didn't know how good I had it until I replaced them with Bridgestone Dueler Revo's on the advice of a friend (Chevy 1/2 ton truck). I hated the Revo road noise.

My 2nd gen 94' Runner has BFG All Terrain T/A 31x10.5 R15, too bad those are not available for the 16" rim...great tire.

I went with the Yokohama Geolandar AT+II's and love 'em. Quiet on the road, good traction all around... dry, wet, snow, ice, dirt, rocks. It looks like I'll get decent mileage out of them, too... probably 40k without a problem.

I would stick with the BFG All-Terrain T/A KO's. This is the 3rd runner I have put them on. I was glad to see they now make 'em in a 265/70 16. They say the BFG's should get 60K ($170 each). The cheapest tire they had was a pathfinder trail AP @ $107, only good for 40K.

I strongly agree, I guess I need some feedback to justify the $178 a tire...we just received 6"snow on top of ~1" of ice, from earlier freezing rain. I took the '85 Land Cruiser to work and back today. The BFG AT 31X10.5-15's with 35K on them still grab like they were new. Alas, I am selling that old rig, hence my user name...thanks.

With over 100" of snow this year I replaced the Michelins that had 73K. I bought the runner used with the Michelins on it. I have a steep mountain driveway and I couldn't make it up in High4, High4Locked or Low4Locked with the Rear differential lock engaged. With the BFG All-Terrain T/A KO's I only need High4. New tires really make all the difference, and could save you from an accident on icy roads. Well worth it if you have to drive on 6" of snow on top of 1" of ice. Any fender bender can top $2,000 fast. Call the $712 preventative maintenance.
