Body Damage is Cool
After a day of working with the 22R carbureted engine's nest of pipes, hoses, wires and vaccum lines I've decided to ditch the carb and go EFI. I have a complete '89 4runner donor vehicle and an additional motor from a '92 pickup, so I have backup parts if I need them. The 4runner also has A/C that will get introduced to my truck. My strategy is to completely rewire my truck with the 4runner body and engine harnesses, the instrument cluster, ECU, ect. For the fuel system I have a new fuel tank for a 22re truck, an in-tank fuel pump from the 4runner and a new pump mounting bracket from Toyota (the 4runner tank and bracket are different but the pump is the same). Am I missing anything? -- Matt

If that's going into the '84, and you've got the external voltage regulator, then all the ignition system stuff will need to come onto it as well. I can tell you even with my '86 carbie (internal regulator) that the coil/ignitor are not the same as for my 87 EFI. I think you'll want to double check the distributor application as well.

Do some documentation for the tech section later on.

The ignitor, the distributor and the alternator, (and the AFM) will all come from the 4runner. I's a nice matched set. The 4runner ran when I got it, but it has a bad head gasket with coolant leaking into the cylinders, so I didn't run it enough to really be satifsied that everything else is 100%, but at least I heard it run! -- Matt

Thanks. I'm going to read up to refresh and then dive in. I also have some threads bookmarked from the Marlin Crawler board. When you mention the ORS harness adapter on Marlin or Pirate you need to be wearing a fireproof suit. I guess they think it's unmanly to try to avoid totally dismantling your vehicle in the pursuit of Toyota 4x4 improvements. Not here on friendly 4x4wire though.

I made good progress today. The dash and all the heating ducts are out. I even took the dash crossbar support out so I could get good access to surgically remove the original harness. I removed the entire wiring harness in the front half of the truck and the branch running along the passenger side back to the tail lights. The engine compartment is also entirely stripped of the old wiring as well ; Fuse panel, emissions computer ('84 CA ), relays, circuit breakers, harnesses, all gone. I forgot that I would have to remove both fenders to get to the harnesses where they run between the inner and outer fenders (passenger and drivers sides), so that added some unexpected work.

Yesterday I had removed the carb, intake mani, head and exhaust mani. Today I stripped the engine of the remaining '84 emissions related stuff like the air pump, and the air injection tubing manifold and tubing. Removed the IC regulator for the alternator as well, Won't need that anymore either.

I'm working outside and this is Wisconsin so it's winter for real, but today was a sunny day with the high temp at about 33F, a veritable heat wave for this part of the country at this time of the year and quite comfortable for me. Tomorrow will be only a couple of degrees colder, but I'll need to push ahead because Sunday will see temps rising to highs of no more than 17F with low single digits during the night. The forcast looks about like that for the next week as well, so I may have to break out the propane heater and the plastic sheeting to get this thing done by mid week.

I thought that this might be a frustrating job, but so far I'm enjoying it. I think part of it is that Toyota builds things in a way that makes sense, with everything pretty well designed and executed (except that kludge of emissions parts that comes with the carb engine). If I had to put the carb manifold and all that junk back on I might not be as happy. Three bolts in the exhaust manifold also snapped off, but I'm not suffering because I have an fine manifold from a spare '92 motor that I had already disassembled a while back. The '92 is also the head donor.

Another piece of good news is that the local machine shop was able to do a valve job on the '92 head the same day that I brought it in. The mating surface was good enough that it didn't reen to be resurfaced and the guides were all within tolerances, so they just cleaned it, ground the valves and installed new valve stem seals.

Things on the check list for tomorrow include pressure washing the engine and engine compartment, stripping the wiring harnesses off of the 4runner and installing them on the truck, and swapping over the under-the-dash parts of the 4runner's A/C to the truck. If I can get to it, I'd like to prime and paint my new gas tank too. -- Matt

I took advice from Kewlynx and organized my dash fasteners with cardboard scrawled with notes (I was about 2/3's of the way through the dash dismantle when I took the pic. Now the cardboard is almost full!). That and ziplok bags maked with a permanent marker and Glad plastic containers with lids.

Today I only got around to degreasing and pressure washing the engine and engine compartment, and made progress on stripping the wiring harnesses out of the 4runner. Most of my time on the last item came from labling connectors, disassembling the dashboard brackets, supports and ducting, removing the seats, and pulling out the steering column to get more elbow room. The dashboard part of the harness is similar to the '84 pickup that will receive the 4runner parts except for the extra A/C bits, the ECT (auto transmission) branch and the 4runner specific controls for the power tailgate window. I'm going to be able to cut most of that stuff right out except for some stuff the engine ECU looks for from the transmission. I forget exactly what that is right now, but I have discussed it with another guy who has used a 22RE auto ECU and harness to do what I am doing. I remember it was pretty simple though, something to do with showing a neutral signal to the computer to allow a normal starting mode to occur when cranking the motor over with the key.

All the blue bits you see in the picture are masking tape labels for the wiring connectors. It looks bad but I've been kind of half studying this deal for years, so it all makes fairly good sense to me. -- Matt

I may be crazy, but I'm having fun so far.

With all the hundreds of fasteners I've been turning the last two days I find that my Makita 14.4 volt cordless impact is myábest friend. With a 1/4" hex drive It's really a little light duty for mechanic work, but it's rated at something like 100 ft lbs of torque and it's nice and compact. It's great for interior work and handier than an air ratchet or a 3/8 drive pneumatic impact gun. I haven't been able to run the battery down in a days use yet either and it probably uses less energy in a week than my compressor uses just to start up once. I imagine that this and the Milwaukee 28 volt cordless 1/2" drive impact gun (325 ft lbs rating) would be handy for trailside/roadside repairs too. At over $400 the Milwaukee is not cheap though. -- Matt

The 22RE trucks and 4runners have a lot more wiring in the harnesses than the carbureted models. The 22RE engine compartment has three harness branches coming from the cab to the engine compartment as opposed to only two in the carbed trucks. In the pictures below you can see how the thre branches enter the engine compartment. I had to remove the heater blower to get access to the branch that passes through firewall directly into the engine comparment. I'm taking the A/C from this 4runner for he truck so I pulled that out too.

The three engine compartment harnesses:

  • The ECU harness
Passenger Side Fender Harness (The Power Harness)
Drivers Side Fender Harness (The Accessory Harness)

I'll have some pictures of the body harnesses tomorrow. -- Matt
