If I were you, I'd leave as much of the dash alone as possible and make sure stuff is secure, and take 'er for a spin. After that, finish it up. I hate dash work, that's why I mentioned it.
Light at the end of the tunnel! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
That's a good point. I sure don't need heaters, radios, clocks to and such to get the motor running. And I'm a little worried about the heater core pipe where it passes through the firewall. I got a little rough with it when changing the heater hose. If there is a leak and I needed to replace the pipe I'd sure be hating life if I had to pull the dash apart again to get to it.
I still have a couple of wiring mods to make regarding the 4WD switch, neutral start, and the backup lights. Most of that stuff came up through the floor at the head of the transmission tunnel in the '84 and joined the wiring harness under the dash near the radio. On the '89 (auto tranny) it's part of the engine harness (part of the plugs in the picture below) , but can be accessed near the ECU by the passenger footwell kick panel. So far I've traced down the neutral switch circuit and the back-up lights to intercept them under the dash. The neutral circuit just needs to be closed to allow the starter to spin and I am told that it can be closed full time without adverse effects. The back-up lights need a few feet of wiring and a plug salvaged from my old harness. The 4WD indicator needs to pickup a wire from the instrument cluster and connect to the ecu.
Here's a shot of tranny wires in the engine compartment that won't be needed any longer.
