So, My rear-end makin' some noise, time for a new one.
Previous owner brenaded-it, and half-assed put it back together.

I've got a Dana 35, tossin' it. Thinkin' Dana 44. With an E-Locker.

Now, I'm not too familiar with buildin' up axles(I've got a reputable shop where I send my customers to for rear-end work)but, let's say I get my hands on a Dana 44, what (if any at all) are things that I should build up, so-to-say?

What other axle options do I have here?

91 Cherokee, 4.0, Auto, Limited.

you would have a better chance at finding a chrysler 8.25 that will bolt right in than a d 44 that will bolt in.
the d44 only has one spline more on the axel than the chrysler does. you should be able to find one fairly easily in a boneyard. the chrysler rear looks simular to the d 35 but instead of the cover being even all the way around a bit of the diff sticks out at the bottom of the cover. also it will have the chrysler pentastar on it instead of dana. and th axel tubes ar close to 3 " on the outside,wheras the 35 id 2.5 or so.



i beleave the same options exsist for both the d 44 and the c8.25. so it is mainly a matter of which you find in a cherokee first.

Yeah, just looked up a local junkyard, they've got bunches of 'em.

Didn't even think of that chrysler 8.25 axle...

Do you know if they came locked,lsd, or anything of the sort?

eaton and aubun lockers are having major failures and problems, not so different from the early days of ARB, eatons are not a bad design, but they are falling apart.
Auburn is a joke, these use only magnetic strength to hold it locked, bad bad bad.

Eaton is backordering theirs for 3-4 more months to debug the e locker, they are sticking in locked mode and are clicking and banging on the street.

ARB after 20 years has it dialed in, forget about all rumores of problems with them they work everytime.
Provided they are installed correctly.

Wait 10+ years for auburn and eaton to debug their lockers.

PS go with a d44, do away with c clips any chance you get.

I would recomend the D44 for the 30 spline axel. strength.. and dependability.. and the availability of parts. if you want a locker with the carrier here is a idea.. detroit soft locker- NO SLIP

i do beleave the newer 8.25's had lsd,as for the d 44 it has only ONE spline more than the 8.25 so the strenght differance is not enough to worry about. another thing is the 8.25 is far easier to find than a d 44 when it comes to something that will bolt right up without mods of any type. even if it does break,wit the amount of them that can be found parts are fairly cheap.
