Getting the Wheeling Fever
It got really cold a couple of weeks ago and when I started my 85 with a 22RE the power steering unit puked fluid back through the reservoir and starting growling like no tomorrow. Figured the power steering pump gave up the ghost so I ordered a used unit from TAP recycling. Well a few scraped knuckles later I've got the replacement unit installed. Fired up my rig and I'm still having the same problem?

Any suggestions on what else might be wrong? I didn't replace the sensor with the two air hoses and was wondering if this could be the problem.

Had the problem a few weeks ago (was -20c). Changed the fluid and it cleared the problem Used the new Dextron 3 tranny fluid. Also make sure you bleed the system by turning lock to lock a few times.

Canuck,
thanks for the input. Any suggestions on why the replacement unit would do the same thing? Or is this strictly a maintenance issue that gets over looked?

I thinking may be you were low on fluid resulting in air in the system. Did you bleed the system with the new used pump. Also how cold you talking because I think your cold is our beach weather here in the Toronto area.

low teens and I agree that would be beach weather for you. I didn't realize the unit needed to be bleed like brakes. I'll chat with the mechanic in the morning and make sure we all on the same page.

Just so you understand all you do for bleeding is turn the steering wheel back and forth lock to lock a few times. There is no bleed nipples like brakes.

Some steering boxes do have bleeder valves like the brakes.

Go to the FSM at the top of the page and follow that bleeding process.

You are using ATF and not power steering fluid I hope.

What did TAP charge you for a used pump? They really think their parts are gold; I will not buy from them...

Well the saga continues. It turns out it isn't the pump (put a rebuilt one in and it still growls) and to be honest the mechanic is stumped. He's bled the power steer system and still has the growling noise. One of the things that I haven't received good clarification on is the small solenoid that has two hoses running from the intake manifold that mounts on the pump?

Opps.......TAP charged me $65.00 for a used pump.

I'm downloading the FSM, but it might be tomorrow before its on my system.

That is a vacuum switching valve (VSV) that sends vacuum to the idle up valve to boost the idle speed when power steering assist is needed.

I also use the bleeding tips on Howe's page:
