Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'd like to go too. I'm only about 2 hrs away. I've been gone for the last couple of days, and haven't kept up with the post. I've been by the place a bunch of times.

I would be up for going if it is late enough in the fall. It gets a little too warm out there in the summer.

Just got the book, really well laid out. Great read and easy to follow. Hope to see several of you there.

The Mojove Road Guide ? That's a great book.

I have that and the Mojave National Geo Map and the complete "bread crumb" GPS TOPO trail from a guy that drove it.

It's pretty strait forward trail except the parts that go thru the sand washes. The run is still in October sometime, not hammered down yet still seeing how it fits in. I hoping either my dad or my brother will fly out.

I went through this road about three years ago. The road is pretty easy. This is not about hard off-road - just fun in the wilderness.

The mud from Soda lake was sticking to my Rodeo for about 8 months. The steam cleaning did not help. I used metal tools to take off the sticky mud. I do not know what kind of nasty chemicals they put in the mud.

Depending on the date, I may join the ride.

Keep in mind that in October the nights are very cold in the desert. I recommend going in September.

I can understand your concern about the temps. I've lived in El Centro area for over 30 years.

Perhaps this information will help plan the trip.

Note the comment about the afternoon thundershowers in Sept.

Trying to think ahead.

thanks for the info. I have to say that the info contradicts my own experience: the night temperatures in October were close to 32F (the water was frozen).

Let me add some information:

Dates are not set, I'm thinking early October how does that sit with everyone? I'm open for suggestions.

as I wrote before, September would be better. But I am OK with early October, if you Mitsu guys let me in.

Quote

From San Jose it's 500 miles to the start, 7-8 hours.

the trail can be driven from west to east. This is about 430 miles to the trail start from Bay Area.

Quote

It's a multi-day trip.

The most interesting part can be driven in just two days. We can arrive on Friday night, sleep in the camp, then drive till the Sunday afternoon.

I have my old GPS track. So, the trail finding (Soda Lake crossing, etc) is not a problem.

For safety the only bail out point will be in the middle where we pass over the paved road.

Almost everywhere, we will be within 1 hour range of a good road. If there will be sick or injured or bored people, we will be able to deliver them quickly to the place they need.

My wife gets car sick unless she is driving. Wives and girlfriends are more than welcome. This trip is more "Safari" than hard core 4x4 so it's a great introduction.

this is true. The trail is easy and relatively high-speed, if your vehicle does not mind the prerunner-style driving. There are some optional side rock trips.

I'll be able to come if you guys will set a date in advance, to make necessary personal adjustments.

One more reason why I prefer September: on the October the 1st, the South Coyote Trail in Anza Borrego is opening after the summer closure, and I am planning to go there this year also, in October. Both trails are great (although, they are very different) and I do not want to miss either.
