Would you be mad?: Take your 20R cylinder head into local parts store on a Wednesday. Tell the guy you want his shop to check it for cracks, leakdown, and one exhaust stud needs a helicoil. Get an estimate of around $100 and lay down a $30 deposit. Get no callback. Decide to call them Sunday, no one knows what you're talking about, partly because you no habla espanol. When you do get someone who understands, he says no one here knows anything about it, but "we'll definitely call you Monday". Monday: No call from them. Tuesday: No call from them. Wednesday, you call them. No one still knows what the status is, but you're told when the salesman who took the head from you comes in, he'll call you. You have a life, can't sit by the phone, so when you get home, your salesman DID call, leaving a non-discript message to just call him. You do. He says "Ya, the shop says the head isn't cracked, but they said the valves aren't seating properly, and some water holes need to be soldered up." You say " Really? How much for the job now?" "$225." How would you react? Here's mine: . I say "I'll be over to pick it up this afternoon. Don't do anything with it!". He then says "No wait, I need to call the shop about it." Am I over reacting here? That rebuilt head hasn't more than 350 miles on it since installed maybe 5 years ago. Yes it's sat some, but always garaged, in San Diego, and never 3 months between starts. Oh yeah, it's taken me an hour to write this post, and no call back yet. Your input please. Thanks.

Sorry in advance but I bet you don't get your head back without giving them the balance due and it'll cost you more in $$ and time to sue them.
On another note to get the head checked for cracks, do a leakdown, a helicoil, and a valvejob that price isn't that bad in my area unless that was on top of the original $100.

Did you sign a ôrepair estimateö? If not then I would report them to the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (B.A.R.). Whenever you go to a shop, they have to have you sign a B.A.R. form and if the amount of repair goes over the estimate, they have to contact you before the repair can be made. This applies to California, I do not know about other states.

OK.....It's all over now. Never got a callback. Went over there to pick it up without calling ahead. Didn't see THE salesman who took it, so someone else "helped" me. Explained I just wanted the head back. After tappin' on a terminal and a phone call in Spanish, he brought out the head and a bag which contained the untreated valves & springs. The head looked like it was blasted and was told it had no cracks. So...Breakdown the head, clean it, and TRUST their word on cracks......$40 total. Now I'm looking for a resurface and a helicoil installed. I may be stupid, but I'm not dumb , so yeah, you bet I'll be more careful. It's all about reputation, agree?
