Need a Spot
hey guys thanks for the timly discussion. I just p/u a electric pump yesterday. And let me tell you I can't wait for even the smallest difference in drivability. I can't seem to maintain highway speeds, let alone speed up. on the freeway if there is ever a hint of an uphill grade. She will still climb any freaking tree you point her at. But no more than 40-45 mph up a mountian pass, I have tractor/ trailers pass me going up hill for crap sakes.

Ok here is the question. Can the elect. pump be installed in line like a booster pump. Cause I have been under the impression the was the case. Anyone tried it?

Just remember the needle valve is not capable of handling much more than 5psi. Stock fuel pump pressure spec is 2.? to 4.2psi.

I have no problem maintaining freeway speeds, as long as I'm going downhill or on the flats. Once pointed uphill, and in combination with 33" tires and about 500 pounds of tool boxes and stuff, I am in third gear about 4 grand to maintain some semblance of freeway speed on hills. When the truck was empty last month, i.e. no tools or boxes, I could used 4th gear on the steeper hills, but the engine was taching about 2800 rpm at the top...almost downshift time. With the stock tire size and tools, I have the same experience. My 33" tire and alloy rim weigh less than the stock chromie and tire size, about 14 pounds less. FWIW.

I used Les' idea of gentle persuasion to put the new pump in. I haven't run the truck long enough while the air temp is warm to see if my carb gasket has resealed, only thing I couldn't get the same day. Stupid water in the carb...

I have an electric pump (mounted low back by the tank) in-line with the mechanical pump up front. No more vapor lock at high altitude. Works great.

With my 5.29 gears and 33's I can go up most hills around here in 5th gear and accelerate up them in 4th. Even going up to Eisenhower Tunnel on the I-70 pass (over 11,000 feet and 7% grade) I cook along in 3rd gear without too much trouble.
