If you are going to make the effort to do a swap I can recommend the 3.4. It can be pretty easy. You retain all features of your vehicle such as air conditioning, power steering, cruise control, etc with ease. I don't know the availability of the inline 6 but the 3.4 can be found virtually everywhere. The initial swap package may take a little looking to find all that you need. After that if there is a problem then basically any 3.4 engine will work for replacement. Repairability is a consideration if your plan is to keep it running long term.

The 3.4 gives a very significant power and torque increase. If this is not enough then there are many degrees of TRD supercharging available and even a Squires turbo system kit available for the 3.4 to put you into some big power. 1998 and 1999 year 3.4 are good years for the intial swap package.

The swap can be done in 1-2 weeks working evenings.

Check the link above for data on HP on turbo.
$ = HP and HP = $ The more you spend the more hp you can get. The more hp you get the more money you have to spend on the rest of the vehicle to handle it. Drivetrain, tires, brakes.

I have not actually done it. I am still considering it. My 3.4 swap was completed just in DEC 06. I want a chance to see if it will do what I want. If not then I think about a 5 psi turbo would do the trick for me. So far I have been pleased with the normally aspirated 3.4 alone.

The 3.0 inline 6 is definatley a monster and has the history of easily kicking out huge hp. I think I may have viewed the same article you have. He also mentioned that his drivetrain was having a hard time handling all the hp and the traction of big truck tires.

I was told by the guys at ORS.com that 1998 and 1999 were the easiest electronically to swap. Also they said that these were very good because of the compatability of the ECU to adapt to forced induction like the TRD supercharger "including the 7th injector option". I chose a 1999 Tacoma engine and ECU for my swap based on this.
Another place to checkout for 3.4 engine mods is customtacos.com Search for turbo

Try this link to my swap if you haven't already seen it. You can see how it looks and stuff fits.
