OK Brian, you have some explaining to do:

What could be so great about the other two vehicles that you would keep both of them and get rid of the 89????

1989 reg cab pickup, 22re, 31s, 4.56s, rear ARB, rear OME springs, RS9000s, otherwise stock.

Are you married?

I can't exactly get rid of the wife's Subi Forester, and if I have a rig that averages 14 mpg, I darn well better keep my little Honda as a daily driver. That's basically my reasoning behind keeping the Honda. Besides, the Honda can live outside all day long. My truck would likely get carjacked after only a few days, so that's really a HUGE issue for me. I rent and have a nice long tandum garage, but it will only fit 1 large and 1 small rig, not two large rigs, which means my other cars have to live out in the parking lot. Not good. If it didn't stick out like a sore thumb, that would be better. I am planning on "detuning" the exterior as much as possible in preparation for sale or at least sitting outside for a while.

I just don't want to wake up one morning and find it gone...we'll they'll have a hard time driving off with it, with my security features, but I don't want to find it stripped.

Nothing dark about that, except that 4x4wire doesn't have as much action in their Landcruiser forum. Does it have the 1FZFE 4.5L inline six? I've heard that it's like an oversized 2JZ Supra motor, with bulletproof internals and huge potential for power upgrades.

Ya, it does have the 1FZ. What amazes me about that motor is how HUGE the displacement is compared to how little h.p. it makes. The compression ratio is pretty low too, so I can imagine it's seriously under tuned and would love forced induction.

However, it is a torque monster. Not that you necessarily feel it in a 6000lb rig with an auto tranny. While it only tops out at about 275 ft/lbs of torque, it makes around 250 of it just off idle! And maintains a steady climb to 275, before dropping off around 3800 rpm. That's getting close to V-8 torque out of a inline 6. Of course, it is a HUGE inline six at 4.5 liters.

I think the engine's biggest asset is not power or torque and certainly not fuel effeciency, but it's plain 'ol 22RE like bulletproofness. Those things regularly attain 300K miles with little or no issues. Even though it's a much newer design, I'm reminded that basically the 22RE and 1FZ have one thing in common. Large displacement for their class with low output. I'm sure that contributes significantly to their longevity.

Insurance shouldn't be too bad, you already have 3 cars on an account, adding a fourth should be less than $50/mo.

Do you have any relatives in the area with extra room to store the '89?

Would your wife want to drive the Cruiser everyday, or does she have a long commute?

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

It's a little more than that, and when you factor in a full insured Cruiser adds a ton to the insurance, it's not impossible to pay, but it's kind of rediculous to pay out that much money every month. But that's just one of several reasons.

Possibly, but then it's just going to sit and not be used and it will still be outside, so the risk of theft and prowl still exists.

Ya, she does have a long commute so that's really impractical. I'm a little dismayed at the miles she's racking up on the Subaru, but of course she refuses to drive my stick shift CRX.

I know what you're all thinking, but really in the end, it's just time to move on. If the truck is worth enough to generate some funds to build up the Cruiser with things like an ARB bumper, winch, lockers, etc, or at least some of those things, I'll be plenty happy not having the truck. The Cruiser will go anywhere I would have taken the truck, so in the end, I'm not losing anything by letting it go.

We're not married to our vehicles. We can divorce and upgrade to a better model.

Aha! Welcome to the Dark Side! You will absolutely love the Cruiser, when you spend some time inspecting it and fiddling with it you'll be amazed at the lengths Mr. T went to engineer these things.

You will likely find your insurance going up due to the Cruiser on coverage comparable to what you have now. Replacement parts etc are much more expensive than the pickup, and they are capable of inflicting great damage.

Really the only power mods available are turbo and SC. Everything else is window dressing and not worth it. I strongly suggest you set aside some coin for a full tune and maintenance. I haven't done everything to mine *yet*, but the power is sufficient for me and I'm averaging right at 14mpg city and almost 16mpg highway.

There are some quirky things you'll need to address, if the PO hasn't: heater hose, O2 sensor wiring, EGR, PCV.

33's fit with no lift. I'll be replacing my sagging stock suspension with OME stock height coils and some new shocks, the stability and clearance with this setup is superb.

Enjoy it, and be sure to post up in our Cruiser Forum here. BTW what color is it?

(I am like a proud papa every time I look at mine or get in it.)

Thanks Joe!

The color is Moonglow pearl, which is sort of a bluish grey that was only available from '95-97. I was really looking for an expedition white one, but this color has sort of grown on me.

Fortunatley, the miles are low enough (85,000) that most of the normal PM items haven't become an issue yet. Even the front end is in good shape. No leaking front axle wipers. I'll PM the PHH when I get a chance, although I don't think it will be an issue at this mileage. The front brakes are brand new, including calipers, but were done by a shop who apparently didn't know how to bleed the brakes as the pedal has more travel than it should. The rear brakes are about 50%. There's a very, very slight oil leak from the backside of the motor, which could be the valve cover or could be slow leak from the rear main seal. I hear both are pretty common and neither one is a deal breaker. One is an easy fix and if the other, most apparently just live with it for them many years with no issues. I do need to do a tranny service and replace all the fluids. Most have been done recently, but I want a fresh start on everything, so I know where I'm am.

I don't have any plans for motor mods. I'm looking for extreme reliability, and even though the Land Cruisers can weight in at more than 3 tons, I'm sure it will be faster than my 2.6 ton truck with 100 h.p.

This rig will be almost exclusively for expedition use, and the theme for the build up will be reliability, durability, simplicity and low profile. It will be parked a lot in remote areas with me hiking off to explore things, so I don't want to attact too much attention.

The short build plan will include, ARB front bumper, 9500lbs winch, stock suspension (except for new coils, if needed to compensate for weight) 33" tires, at least one rear ARB locker.

Sliders, front ARB and regearing the axles are possibilities, along with a low profile roofrack. Plus a ton of interior mods for storage and electronics.

I got a ton of plans, so that's really a large reason why I need to sell the truck. I'm much better off funding a good chunk of this build that way, since I've spent a chunk of money just on the base vehicle.
