My buddy has a '93 Trooper, auto. He states that if he puts the truck in park and leaves it idling, he can't get it to shift out of park. He also states that when he goes to start it, he has to put it into neutral to get it to shift out of park. Any ideas? I was thinking there has to be some sort of interlock for the transmission. Is there a way to bypass this, or a way to test it? Thanks in advance!!

Yes, there is an interlock that the brake light switch
controls.
When you press the brake pedal, a solenoid near the shifter
removes a block and allows the shifter to move.
When you depress the brake pedal, you should be able to hear
the solenoid click.
To get to the solenoid, you have to take up the shifter console. If I'm not mistaken, the solenoid is on the drivers
side of shifter assembly.

Just be aware of the possible problem that can result from
removing or disabling this.
The transmission can be removed from park without the key
in the ignition and without the brake pedal being depressed.

Yes the shift interlock is suspect.

But I have to ask how he can "put it in neutral" if he can't shift out of park? Just wondering...

That stumped me at first also. It must mean putting the transfer case in neutral.

The deal is, when the truck is "cold", or hasn't been run for awhile, he can shift the truck into neutral and get it to start and work fine. If he starts the truck first, then he sometimes has issues, sometimes not. He did state that when the truck is "warm", or if it is running and he shifts into park, he cannot get it out again(sometimes). I think that the problem actually happens all the time, but if they shift into nuetral before starting, then the solenoid has no power to work, maybe? If the truck is running, the solenoid never works. This is just a guess on my part, I am a little fuzzy on the whole thing myself, thus the reason for the post. Thanks for the response!!
