I have an 85 Monty SWB with the 4 cylinder and 5 speed tranny. I'm having some trouble with shifting into fourth gear.

I cannot just position the shifter into the 4th, let off the clutch, give gas and go. I must hold the shifter into the gate, let off the clutch and load the drive train by gassing it before I can release the shifter .... otherwise it pops out of gear. Once it's in forth and rolling ... no problems. It's just that there's no casual shifting into 4th anymore. It takes a bit of trickery. Oh yeah, I cannot downshift into forth at all .... won't stay in gear.

There are no other dissernable problems with the tranny or clutch .... so what's up ???

Thanks guys !

Do you have problems in other gears? Have you pulled the shifter lever to check the plastic ball-thingy on the end inside the transmission tower?

Check the input shaft end play and the main shaft end play as well as the shifter system.

The third-fouth gear synchro hub bridges the gap between the input shaft and the main shaft so if there is a change in spacing from a failing bearing retainer of a bad bearing it will affect one or the other and sometimes both.

your tranny is probably gonna be a nightmare from now on oh and if any of you diehard fivespeed guys are interested in making your tranny stronger i have something for you but keep in mind it'll only work on a good tranny and not a beat one or rebuilt one because once they get to a certain point they're gone no use in rebuilding because it will keep failing, now if it had been rebuilt just for preventive maintinace you're probably in good shape PM me for more details oh and this is a low dollar upgrade

Ok, in each gear, going down the road at about 2500-3000rpms, let off the gas and reapply the gas while watching the movement of the shifter. Normal movement is only a slight rocking from side to side. If the shafts are moving front to back per KevinC, you should see the shifter bumping fore and aft.

In my experience with the KM145, the next step for yours is a loud shriek and a loss of either all gears, or all but 4th and revenge. With no more warning. I told you so x 3...

That's EXACTLY how it went down on my GENII 5 speed as well. I ended up find a low mileage tranny out of a salvage vehicle and having that put in. Like butta since.
