360 & 258 carb rebuid or EFI? #786419 02/04/07 04:54 PM

Do I continue with perpetual carb rebuilds with my 2150, or go with EFI? Josh, you mentioned EFI a couple of weeks ago. I tried going with CustomEFIs, but I gave up after waiting for 6 months. (Nice guy, but totally disorganized.) Doesn't the 258 have the same setup as the 360, just to make the topic of wider appeal.

Maybe I'm just buying kits that are too cheap. NAPA sells an Echlin. $60 is way more than I spent at Auto Zone.

I need to register in CA, so that's a factor.

Any experience with the ignition modules?

Hey Berkley What parts of the kits are you installing? What are the problems that the carb is giving? I have found that adjusting the float and maybe the red pump diaphram is all that carb ever needs besides a good passage cleaning.
A kit should last near 100K in my opinion. But on the other hand a nice tb injection would always be better.

The last time I touched it, I only replaced the diaphram for the power valve. I also replaced the nearby gooey rubber vaccuum hoses.

If it's supposed to last 100K, then something is wrong. It was last rebuilt by someone who supposedly knew what he was doing. He had that thing apart in a flash. There's no doubt he had done it before, but that doesn't mean he knew what he was doing.

Would anything else cause rough running, smell of gas, and continually degraded performance?

It's got a couple of ball bearings in it that serve as valves. It is possible you have some gummy's keeping the balls from doing their job... The choke could be partially in the ON position.. I cannot remember if the vac is routed thru the top of the carb or not.. Is yes then the gasket could be leaking vac..
