96 Tacoma 3.4 ignition and code question. #787470 02/08/07 01:46 AM

My 96 3.4 tacoma chk eng. lite came on with a code of P0302= misfire #2 cyl. I have checked plugs and wire (NEW Bosch.) but still runs like a fouled plug. Has anyone had this problem and or its resolve under their belts? I read on another site that some people have had the same symptom because they had installed platinum plugs. (Which I have). They prefer factory. Anyone here feel the same? What do I do next? Advise? Thanks. "S"

Run OEM spec plugs only in these trucks. The ignition system was designed to run on a specific spark plug. I would change the spark plugs and do a compression test while I had the plugs out. If it still has a miss on that cylinder with the correct spark plugs installed and the compression was good in that cylinder, you have a bad coil for that cylinder.

Not that it would cause fouling in one of your cylinders (at least in my opinion), I've heard nasty things about Bosch plugs. I have also heard from several different sources that the stock plugs (dual-ground NGKs or DENSOs?) will perform much better than any Bosch plugs will; even in supercharged or heavily-modified engines. As for the OBD code troubleshooting, I agree with John. Plus, compression tests are really easy. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Ditch those Bosch plugs and get some OEM Denso/NGK plugs. Our Tacos don't agree with those POS Bosch plugs.

The Bosch's are in a higher heat range, is why.

I has CEL for misfire on #1. I changed out the plugs (they were far from new) and that fixed my problem. Different engine but similar PCM programing and logic.

NGK all the way!

On a car that I owned a few years back the PO had installed Bosch Platum plugs not long before I bought it (he was a friend). I kept running into a dead miss from time to time. What the heck. It got more frequent and more frequent. Turns out the problem was the spark plug had seperated inside and eventually the electrode fell off.
