The other day my transmission started growling. The growl would increase with the RPMs and not with the vehicle speed. I changed out the transmission fluid and found tons of fine metal powder in the fluid. I'm guessing I somehow managed to chip a tooth on a gear. So I've a couple of questions.

1) The manual says to use 5w-30 motor oil and not gear or transmission oil. Can that actually be right?

2) I'm planning on swapping out the transmission with a used one while I rebuild my current one. What other Isuzu vehicles share the same transmission as my '89 2wd Amigo?

Thanks

Oh yes... if you put gear oil in there, you'll quickly be hearing growling from the replacement tranny as well. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Thanks Sean and Jerry!

I took a look at my Chilton's last night, and I got a little confused.
It says some of the Trooper IIs (85-91) and pick-ups (85-87) use a MSG-5. It also says some Amigos (89-91) use a MSG-5C, but other Amigos (92-94) and some pick-ups (92-95)use a MSG-5L. Does anyone know the difference between the MSG-5, MSG-5C, and MSG-5L?

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
