E-Locker retrofit ? #789449 02/14/07 09:48 PM

I have read the tech article about retrofiting an e-locked rear into a non e-locked axle housing. I did not notice where the article said what vehicle type or year he was actually installing it in.

I want to put one in my 1995 V6 4Runner. Anyone know if this technical article pertains to my proposed installation?

Also a newb question. What is the undesirable characteristic of auto or other lockers on snow and ice? I read numerous comments about avoiding using them in these conditions. Aussie locker has this caution plastered all over there web page for their locker.

Thanks

This is what I hear. Retro fitting may not be worth it since the non trd axle is not the same as the trd axle, getting an ARB locker may be better. It can be done but may be unnecessary as far as work and time put in. As far as non selectable lockers on ice and slick stuff it is because you will break loose easier and the back end has a tendency to be all over the place. It can be remedied by driving style but odds are if you are in snow and ice conditions a lot it is better to have a selectable locker. You will also get faster wear on the rear tires.

Totally worth it. You can pick up a used unit cheap. I bought mine for $400.

Here's my install and some links on my page, for my 88 4Runner which would be the same axle as your 4Runner

Thanks, Nice article on your install. Did you get your locked unit with the correct gears or have to install a set?

Any suggestions on supplier for ring and pinion gear set?

If you need to drive in snow and ice and still want a locker, you definitely should get a selectable locker instead of an automatic locker. This is because you need open diffs to drive on ice and most snow. But it's very handy to also have the locker available for deep snow. If you have a foot or more of snow, lockers are fantastic and make a world of difference. I drove all over the place with 30" of snow when I used front/rear lockers in December while other 4 wheel drives were getting stuck by following my tracks.

For ring and pinions, two of the companies generally accepted to be good are Yukon and www.precisiongear.com
