T-100 ashtray will not stay closed #790129 02/16/07 11:06 PM

I have a 1997 T-100 with 100,000 miles on it. My problem is that the ashtray will not stay in the closed position. I do not smoke, so the ashtray is barely used. I have emptied out some change, etc. and it still will not stay in the closed position.

What is the mechanism that keeps this baby closed? Is it the plastic rails on the sides? Maybe they have worn a little.

Thanks for your help.

Mine has done that since I can remember. I put strips of velcro on both sides, out of sight. That keeps it closed most of the time, it still pops open occasionally on washboard roads...

I use mine for change and it does the same thing... or use to. One day I got really tired of it and took a knapkin and shut the ashtray with the knapkin in the plastic runner (tore off all the overlap)... stays put nicely now!

Ain't it amazing that the Japs can build such a good truck and have such a wimpy ash tray at the same time? both of my 93's had same problem. Use the paper trick now - gonna try the velcro though. Thanks for the tip

See, if you guys just stuck to using it for it's designed purpose you'd find the tar buildup from snuffing butts in it keeps it closed just fine <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

Take the ashtray out, scuff up the side ridges that run in the tracks (with some sand paper) clean it good with finger nail polish remover, put some super glue or clear fingernail polish on them and let it dry. When you install it, it will fit tighter and stay shut better. In time it will wear, but this was a simple fix for mine.

I put some black friction tape on the edge of the metal thingy that pops up when you remove it. When installed, it pushes up and the added friction keeps it from opening on its own. It's worked that way for a couple years, but on really rough roads it still opens on occasion.

My T100 has 125k miles and the ashtray has never opened, even when jumping the truck. But I don't keep any change in the ashtray either. Does it still pop out if you don't put anything in it? There might be a reason why T100's have those change/quarter holders on the dash.
