Sounds like the Kia acts like the older GMC overdrive. When towing it finds OD when the load lightens and drops to "third" when it has to pull. Does the "power button" disable the OD? If so, I would use it. If not try leaving the tranny in 3rd. It might seem like you would use more gas, but really, without the shifting, you dont. And yes , the tranny cooler is a must.
(I pull a 30' travel trailer in the mountains with a 88 suburban, on any grade, it has to be out of OD!)

Need a Spot
Thanks for the info...
I'm still curiously exactly how much the "Power" setting changes the shift points, compared to the "Economy" setting.
I ran through a tank of gas on "Power", and ran through a tank of gas on "Economy." NO DIFFERENCE. Switched back and forth between the two, for about 3 hours one day and observed no detectable difference in the rpm's at the shift points. I'm beginning to think that either (1) the damned thing is broken; (2) Its just some dysfunctional mechanism designed to be a selling point to sell more cars. I wonder if its not just a button, with nothing attached to the back of it.
I think I'm going to start with a transmission cooler and install a K&N filter.
Is there a substantial difference between just a plain drop-in K&N filter replacement and an entire cold air intake (high performance) product?
Anyone done this type of modification with any thoughts?

IIRC it only changes the shift points on wide open throttle, and I think it is by about 500 rpm. You probably wouldn't notice it or may not even "trigger" it on a partial throttle.

Doesn't help much when you tow 2 ton for 1600 miles in 90-100 degree heat...

What is happening is the transmission is going through all four gears, then the torque converter locks up feeling like a "fifth" gear. This "fifth gear" will unlock as soon as it detects any significant load, and in fact has to unlock to allow the transmission to change down to third gear. It sounds like what you are feeling is the torque converter "hunting", dropping in and out of lock. Given that you are towing a load then this behaviour would not be considered unusual

I agree with that interpretation. I gives me the idea that a switch to cut the TCC at will might be interesting..and in fact I'd be tempted to use the ECO/PWR button for that function, since indeed it does not serve any real utility as it is. Fact is this TCC is not very sensitive to throttle inputs, and in most cases, it will let go only at same time as shifting to 3rd, contrary to my other car where each can almost be trigged independently at will (my Transport applies TCC to 3rd and 4th gear).
Cutting TCC would indeed save the clutch from "marginally" excessive torque in some circumstances ..and let the engine rev just a little faster so that it falls in the "torque" region.

THis would light up the CEL though....and at same time, the torque converter slip would induce some extra heat and then the suggested transmission cooler would be a welcome addition for long haul.
The split would be on blue/black stripe wire that goes from pin 22 on Transmission control module to TCC connector 2 at transmission solenoid plug.

I'll try that next summer: I think it will allow some hills to be taken in 4th without TCC instead of dropping to 3rd....will report.
