Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey everyone
I have an 87 4Runna with a 22RE in it.
Once it warms up, the idle wil surge up and down when i come to a stop.
I have been told this could be th EGR but is there a diagnostic code or some way of finding out exactly what it is before spending close to $200 for an EGR??
Thanks
Jay

How about spending 200 seconds (or less) lowering your idle instead?

The ECU gets a signal from the brake light switch. If the ECU senses IDL from the TPS and Brakes, it checks the RPM. If the RPM is over 1100, it cuts the fuel injectors off. When the RPM drops below 800, it turns them back on. This can cycle repeatedly if your idle is too high, and it would look like 500-1200 rp0m surges... About one per second.

Lower your idle to 750.

On TOP of the throttle body... Flat tip screwdriver. Looks like a small bottle cap sticking out if the throttle body.

Do NOT touch the screws on the bottom side... This is a totally different adjustment.

Have same problem. Will try lowering idle after work today.

For every tip on this board helping out a specific problem/person, there's probably another 10-20 or so with the same problem being helped out down the line. Thanks x2.

No problem...

BTW: Did you know your 4Runner looks to have the same packages from the factory as Roger Brown's (aka 4Crawler)? He is a Toyota GOD, and can help you immensely with any issues.

Check his website for most issues surrounding the older 4Runners at http://www.4crawler.com/4Runner.shtml
