I have never owned A jeep but have allways loved them. so here is my question. i am looking for a project jeep for wheeling (have avg. wheeling experience and fairly handy in the shop,built and wheeled my 2000 taco that has 6in lift running 33x12.50 truxxs MT's for about 3 1/2 yrs)The question is which jeep would make the best platform for running 36" super swamps,lockers, offroad bumpers, racks, winch,....and other avg offroading gear. A CJ5, CJ7, or A Wragler. note i dont want to have to spend a ton of money to get it on the trail.

That is a tall order. If you are going with 36's and use to driving a Taco i would say go with longest wheelbase possible becase short wheelsbase like a CJ5 can be a handful in climbs and decesnts. Therefore i would say a CJ7 and if you want one that is going to handle a 36'' tire you'd have to look for a 86 they have a 44 rear end. The other CJ7's Have AMC 20 Rear Axles they are a strong axle when converted to 1 piece. The Older CJ's can be found with a t18 4 speed with low first gear. IF you leave the dana 30 front open you maybe able to handle 36's. Thats My .02

Post 91 Wrangler FI 6 for serious wheeling. Better engine, better frame than a CJ rustbucket money pit. I know, I have 2, but I dont wheel hard. With a wrangler on 36's you're looking at axles, lift and some driveline mods.

hey i am also thinking of soa conversion. anybody have any thoughts, i know that alot of guys that do a soa conversion tend to replace that stock springs with ones that are alittle wider, is that really needed?
