Did a search that answered most my questions but I have a couple more. If I bolt up a pintle hitch can you still open the back door? What's the least invasive way to install the trailer light wiring? I don't think my Montero has the box under the back seat to tap into the wiring. Do you have to remove a taillight to get to the harness?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim, not sure about the pintle hitch. Wiring can be done via a wiring connector at the back of the rig (under rear seat). You'll need to buy another set of both connectors either at the dealer or from the salvage yard or from someone parting out their gen I. The used scenario is best because it will already have wires attached. You can then tap into that wiring setup w/out damaging the OE wiring setup. That's what I did. You should be able to find a pic of my setup if you do a search.

Pintle hitch will fit with no problem. I had one installed for a number of years on my 89 2dr.

I don't have any wiring experience so if you could help me a little please. So, the wiring harness for the taillights has a connection approximately underneath the location of the back seat. Take this connection apart and install a "t" connection for the trailer wiring? No spicing, soldering or removing the taillight assembly?
Thanks again,
Jim

No off the shelf "T-Connector" is available but you can easily make one using basic crimp connectors, wire stripper, & crimper tool.

Here's what mine looks like...

I made it for my LWB so it has about 4' of wire to the end of the 4 pin flat trailer wiring connector. Since this end will be exposed, I covered it in breathable mesh wiring loom which protects it from everything but a major downpour or a complete dunking and also allows it to dry off if wet unlike typical wiring looms.

You can make all the connections but the opposite side turn signal behind the light. The opp. side has to be tapped at the other light, or elsewhere in the harness. The harness to the rear exits the interior of the truck under the back seat and follows the pside frame rail to the pside rear, then goes across the underside of the truck to the dside corner. Making the taps inside the body cavity protects the taps from weather, and it's easy to seal up the wire holes.
