The obvious answer would be to use the Mitsubishi/Dodge brackets and accessories. But the people in the past who have done the swap never mentioned this... The 1st gen truck has the low, sloping hood line which presents trouble when clearing the bracketry. The guy who just finished his swap on an 89 model pickup (whose body style is a lot closer to that of the Montero) didn't have any clearance issues.

im pretty sure that dropping the ranger 2.3 turbo diesel, although configured a bit differently than the 4d55t due to the external parts such as the power steering pump, and the alternator, as well as the odd-looking rad neck, will fit into the montero/raider engine compartment without much issue provided you've used the 2.6 4x4 oil pan, and the 2.6 motor mounts. that's what i've read so far anyway, I am part way through my teardown, but have no doubt that the engine will sit much lower, and that although some parts sit higher, there will be enough space to clear without scoop or hood alterations.

do you know if you can get engine rebuild kits or pistons and hard parts from the mitsubishi dealer. Hey dylan, did that tach work out for you?

I still have some clutch issues to work out and finishing out the fuel line plumbing before the oilburner goes in the Montero engine bay. Based on what I'm seeing here, I'm going with the Montero 2.6 clutch on the Ranger flywheel. I just need to get the clutch here and take it with the flywheel to my machinist to have the holes drilled for it. There was a converted diesel Montero on eBay last week so I downloaded the engine bay pictures and put them here. There are two concerns I see in the pics. One, there doesn't appear to be any cooling fan, belt driven or electric. Two, I don't see a diesel fuel filter/separator of any type. It looks like he may only be running an inline fuel filter. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.southerngrease.com/images/monterodiesel.JPG) ![[Linked Image]](http://www.southerngrease.com/images/monterodiesel2.JPG) ![[Linked Image]](http://www.southerngrease.com/images/monterodiesel3.JPG)

Hey dylan, did that tach work out for you? The tach was working temporarily, but quit soon after I buttoned up the dash. Not sure if it's just a loose connection or if the actual gauge took a crap as I haven't gotten a chance to pull the instrument cluster back out.

I just found this forum and am just finishing up the details on my 4D55T swap, from a dodge d50(i think) to a 91 Mazda B2600I. I did put a 2 inch body lift in to answer any of the height issues. And according to Napa it was the last 2 inch lift left in the USA. But the motor did clear everything with half mazda mounts and half slightly modified diesel mount. I also had to buy a tach converter from dakota digital to convert the diesel signal to a gas tach signal.

Got any more info on the tach signal converter? I don't really feel like fiddling with mine anymore, and it looks pretty rough anyway.

I bought it on ebay for 50 bucks and I think the place was in Georgia, so I had it in like 3 days. It was Dakota Digital Diesel Tach Adapter Part # DSL-1 I searched the web and the one on ebay was the cheapest. The wiring hooks up to the white and black coming off the sensor on the injection pump and to the white tach wiring on the gas dash, ignition power and ground and set a couple settings and your good to go! I just searched ebay and its on their. My swap has had alot of fabricating since the cut off for the 4D55 to fit into mazda's was 90 and I have a 91. I am having a little trouble on mounting the air pump, if someone has some photos of theirs it would be alot of help for me. The factory one on the back of the alternator is long gone! I am not familiar with what style ford has on the ranger model. Thanks.

Hi fellas! I'm the new owner of the eBay truck pictured in the post above. I stumbled onto this thread whilst Googling for more info on the 4D55T engine, and thought I'd drop in to say hello.
