Hi fellas! I'm the new owner of the eBay truck pictured in the post above. I stumbled onto this thread whilst Googling for more info on the 4D55T engine, and thought I'd drop in to say hello.

Welcome. I was ALMOST the buyer of that truck. smile hows it running for ya?

dylanb, did you get all the bugs worked out? Did you plumb in a engine oil cooler? I would like to see some pictures of how the vacuum pump oil lines are plumbed. I don't even have a vacuum pump but my alternator guy claims his supplier will have them this week with new vac pump on the back and all. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I have an engine oil cooler, mounted between the ac condenser and the front grille. I can get you a pic later. I used the ranger setup for all the accessories, so I have a seperate vacuum pump mounted under the alternator, no oil lines to speak of. It's running really well, other than a splotchy starter and a small oil leak I need to fix, hopefully this weekend.

Hi,

I hope it's ok to revive the diesel swap thread. I put mine down awhile ago and picked it back up this weekend. I'll go ahead and add the rest of my findings and pictures as I go.

I worked on removing the AC condenser and dryer today to give the Montero more breathing room since I don't plan to have AC in this truck. I'm reusing the auxiliary electric fan for cooling and will hook it either to a switch or a thermostat.

What's left to do? I need to finish prepping the engine bay and finish the fuel system. I'm also going to splice in the Ranger alternator wiring before I put the motor in. My goal is to have the body and engine fully prepped and plug-n-play when I drop it in.

I need to swap the oil pan and do some measuring of the flywheel and clutch. I also have a Mighty Max coolant neck that I may swap out if I can get everything to fit right in the bay. I'm going to wait on that until the motor is in and the new Montero stock radiator is installed.

Here are some pics:

A little more progress and research today. I learned that a cordless sawzall with a torch blade is a fabricator's best friend!

I cut the exhaust manifold off below where the pipe splits. I need to remove the catalytic converter so I'm hoping to get a pipe bent and welded from the rear cat converter mount to the exhaust manifold on the 4D55 motor. (still mounted on it)

A little more research on the radiator neck. The Ranger had the highest point of the cooling system on the engine at the neck.
[Linked Image]

While the diesel Montero will have a more traditional high point on the stock Montero radiator. Here is the neck I sourced from a Mighty Max 4D55 that I will use if the engine mounts with the radiator at the high point. If the engine sits up too high, I'll keep the Ranger neck.

Now to the alternator wiring. The Ranger alternator has two connectors. One with two brown heavy gauge wires and one white wire.

[Linked Image]

And another with a green, yellow and white wire.

[Linked Image]

Here are the Montero alternator connectors. The first connector has a white wire with red stripes and a blue wire with red stripes. The second connector is just one heavy gauge white wire.

Dylan, if you see this post, I need some help on how you spliced the Ranger alternator connectors into the Montero alternator harness.

Here is a final shot of the engine mounts removed from the Montero 2.6 gas engine that appear to be a perfect fit for pre-tapped holes on the 4D55 diesel motor. I haven't removed the Ranger mounts from the motor yet so I haven't test fit them.

This afternoon I'm going to finish removing the rest of the AC system and get the motor positioned so I can start removing the oil pan.

More to come.

Further up in the thread, there was mention of a diesel tach converter module. Here is the information:

The DSL-1 Universal Diesel Tachometer Adaptor will accept a signal from the "W" terminal found on some diesel alternators (not all alternators used on diesel engines have this extra terminal) and converts the signal into a tachometer signal for a 4 or 8 cylinder standard ignition system tachometer. The DSL-1 is adjustable to allow for the different numbers on the alternator as well as different pulley sizes on the engine and alternator. Calibration should be done using a light tach or another known reference for speed.

Here's another diesel tachometer option if you don't want to use the stock tach. (this one reads pulses in the fuel line using a transducer)

Pmontero - the Ranger mounts on mine were quite different, and yes, the 2.6 ones bolt right in - but I am concerned about the driver's side [intake side] as there is quite a long bracket type extension there, and on mine, it was cracked! I'd get a pic, but I'm sure you've seen what I am talking about. Maybe some welds are needed, or just fab up a bracket of our own.

I will have to get that info for you next time I go to see the truck. It blew a head gasket a little while back and I haven't had a chance to get it back on the road yet. I will tell you how I hooked the wires up and I can probably scan the wiring diagrams I used to figure it ut as well. Glad to see you didn't give up on it.
