I tried to look up the part number for a a new front crank seal for the '86 Ford Ranger diesel and I could only find the "Crankshaft Front Seal Set" that has more than the crank seal. It also says it requires an oil pan gasket to install. Here's the info:

Crankshaft Front Seal Set
NAPA # FPG TCS455641
1986 Ford Truck Ranger
Engines : 2.3 L 140 CID L4 Diesel
Comments: Oil Pan Gasket Required
Per Car Qty: 1

I'm hoping they can get the sub part number for the seal and find one for me.

Here's the fuel pump I'm going to use. It is an electric in-line pump recommended for the 4d55. It even comes with the mounting bracket and hardware. Here are the part number and specs:

Fuel Pump:
NAPA # NFP P74029
Contents : Hardware Package
Fuel Pump Gallons Per Hour : 16.8
Fuel Pump Line Size : 3/8"
Fuel Pump Pressure Rating : 3.8 - 5.7

I'm going to mount it under the truck near the fuel tank. I need to crawl under and see if I can find a position where it will be under a skid plate or at least protected by the frame. I may put an inline fuel filter between the tank and pump... not sure yet.

Had some quality time with the engine today. I started off the morning at the junkyard and scored two different Mitsubishi power steering reservoirs. The one on the left is from a 4 cylinder Mirage. The one on the right is from a V6 Diamante. I have two mounting options now based on the position of the mount.

There was a '90 Montero that lured me to the yard but it had been pulled from a muddy river. Totally trashed. It had a nice bouncy seat but I'm sure the piston is shot.

I pulled the Ranger oil pan from the motor and the crankshaft looks really clean.

There was a piece of foil from the cover on an oil container stuck on the oil pickup screen. Yikes! I'm very careful about removing the foil so this may have happened before I owned it. That was the only thing other than oil on the screen. (the engine only has 70k miles on it)

I scraped the block clean with a razor, cleaned both surfaces with acetone and then prepped the gasket with sealant on both sides. I also coated joints on the block where the oil pump and rear crankshaft housing meet the block. I used a Felpro paper oil pan gasket with Permatex Ultra Black sealant. I tightened the oil pan bolts finger tight, waited an hour for the Permatex to set and then tightened them with a torque-wrench to 5.5 ft/lbs. per the Service Manual.

My engine is looking much more "Pajero-ish" now!!

After removing the headlight washer system, I was looking at the nice connector for the headlight washer pump and then checked out the little button at the end of the stalk on the steering column. Should this be my glow plug button?

I'm assuming the headlight washers switch on/off with the ignition switch? I think this will be a convenient and "stock" looking feature if I put a little glow plug sticker on the button. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

the headlight washer button works only with the lights on... there's a timer too... i guess you could reroute the wires straight to your glow plugs set up, that'll be nice.

If you use the HL washer switch, You're gonna want to rewire it all. It will only enable for a few seconds, and then there is a time cutoff, and I SERIOUSLY doubt that the HL washer relay will support glow plug current draw.

good idea though!!

Thanks for the details on the seal part numbers and the HL washer wiring. I was going to use a Ford glow plug relay but didn't realize the switch was wired in to the HL circuit with a timer. I still may use it but I already have a Radio shack red square push button that I used on the Ranger. I have a lot of sorting to do through the Montero wiring harness so I'll address it when I get there.

I'm going to use the Ford Ranger Diesel 6 rib pulleys with the stock Ford Ranger diesel serpentine belts. My engine does not have an AC compressor. Here are the NAPA part numbers for the two serpentine belts for these engines without AC:

NAPA
PBH 6K408 - Belt - Water Pump & P/S
PBH 6K602 - Belt - Water Pump, Alt & Vacuum Pump

I'm going to be working on the driver's side motor mount bracket removal tomorrow.

Pmontero,

That's the same conclusion I came to on the clutch setup. I found a clutch shop who was more than happy to drill the Ranger flywheel so it would accept the Mitsu cover/pressure plate and used the Mitsu clutch disc as well.

Glad to see you're back on the swap! I've been working in NC for the past year - when i get back later this month I'll be putting in my rebuilt injector pump and hopefully getting my diesel back on the road.
