I found a good deal on a 87 4runner with a broken timing chain and coolant in the oil.My rusted out 84 extra cab has a fresh 22r carb'ed motor ,the problem with the runner is the hood has been off for about 2 years in the weather .I know that the 22r and 22re are pretty much the same with a few changes. My question is will my 22r basicly plug and play or will I need to change anything with the fuel and ignition to get it to work?THANKS!!!

You should be able to swap the fuel injection over to the 22R,you will need to swap all the sensors in the block as well, the only thing im not sure about is if the cams are different.

Is your 84 motor a true 84? Not an 85 or above? Does it have the pear shaped exhaust ports on the head? or Round?
Reason I ask is that IF the fresher motor is '85 to '95, You can use the intake, with all sensors, and exhaust mainifold and bolt those to the carbed long block. Plug and play really. BUT, if it is indeed a shorter '84 block, then you got me there.

Yes it's the older style block that only needs fuel and fire to run ,I was wanting to stay away from the fuel inj because the hood had been off for so long and her son had started to "fix" it 2 years ago. Some of the stuff has been removed and god knows where it all is.I was wondering if it could be like putting a small block chevy into another truck hook up the fuel give the hei 12v and it's running.

Keep in mind that you'll need to at least probably swap gas tanks. The EFI has the fuel pump built in it. Sending unit may be different as well. Other than that, the engine and tranny will bolt together fine. I'm not sure how the EFI in the '87 can be "bypassed" though. Someone will chime in. Usually, it's the other way around, to convert TO efi, not from.

You will need to convert the fuel pump back to mechanical. EFI has an electric pump in the tank. You will need to use your mechanical pump.
Engine will bolt in just fine. You will have to remove everything from the engine bay other than the brake/clutch stuff. You will have to use your engine old wiring harness and "computer" from under the passenger kickpanel. Hopefully the new truck isn't SR5 due to the extra stuff all over.
If you have any specific questions, don't be afraid to ask.

I have talked to others who have used the 22RE fuel tank as is. I was told that an engine mounted fuel pump will pull fuel right through an idle electric fuel pump. If true it means all youáneed to do is modify (extend) the fuel line in the engine compartment.
That said, I think that you should reconsider. The 22RE engine controls are not terribly complicated. With a factory manual and a volt/ohm meter you should be able to figure out what needs to go where pretty easily. I am in the process of swapping a 22RE into my '84 xtra cab. I'd much rather be going in this direction than working with the carburetor. -- Matt

If true it means all you need to do is modify (extend) the fuel line in the engine compartment. The EFI electric pump puts out a constant 56psi(i'm 90% sure thats the correct #). The mechanical pump puts out 4-7psi depending on engine RPM. Anymore than 7psi going into a carb and you got problems.. Theoretically you could put a fuel pressure regulator on the EFI pump, but thats a lotta pressure to regulate down to 4psi and when I tried it the line kept blowing off even when clamped. If you want to use a carburetor, as well as the fuel pump swap, you gotta run three ign triggered wires to the carb.. one (+) for choke two (+/-) for idle cut solenoid. And thats your carbinated wiring harness I love it, three wires - carbs are so fun and simple -Scerb

Why not just disconnect the wires to the fuel pump? That way it doesn't come on at all, and the mech pump on the block would just pull fuel through the pump.
I believe this is what matts is saying
