22re problems ...help! #791912 02/23/07 02:28 AM

I have an 89 pickup with a 22re. It's had a little bit of a bog when romping on the throttle for about a month but I figured it was the cold. Today it bogged out completely. It will start and idle fine, but as soon as the throttle is touched it bogs and sounds like its starved for gas. After it warmed up a little you can push the throttle and it will pop and sputter up to about 2000 rpm. as I let off the throttle it will run smooth and actually rev up. It has new plugs, wires, new injectors and a new fuel filter. I have already thrown in a few cans of gas treatment and made sure the timeing was on. My guess would be sensor or fuel pump related but I was wondering anyone could shed some light. Thanks

Need a Spot
My 88 EFI was doing something similar where it would start and idle fine, but wouldn't rev past 3000 rpm. Problem ended up being the fuel pump, revealed by checking the fuel pressure. I had also replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, wires and fuel filter as part of regular maintenance, but the problem wasn't solved until the fuel pump was replaced.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Jumped time?

Did you lift the valve cover and check the cam timing?

Body Damage is Cool
Put your timing light on it, and watch the ignition while this happens. If the sparks are good and at the right time, you've eliminated this section as being the problem.

That leaves the fuel circuit. Almost always it's low fuel pressure, but these engines have a lousy wiring harness section for the injectors. A listen to the ticking of the injectors will tell you a lot.

the timing seemed good I have been running at about 10-12 degrees btdc when I hit the throttle with the gun on it, the timing drops back to almost zero and then comes up later. The fuel pump is on the list but I wanted to be sure before I get into that mess. The check engine light isnt on, but I do not have a scanner. Is it possible for the cam drive sprocket to actually skip a tooth?

I replaced the fuel pump on sunday and drained the tank. it had some dirt in it but there was no rust. I put clean gas in it and it ran great no missing or sputtering. about three hours later I left it idling for about 15 minutes. It started doing the same thing barely keeping itself running when you touch the gas but it still idles fine. I am putting a new fuel filter in tommorow and got a maf from a junk yard to go in tomorrow too. any suggestions?
