Why would you prefer a turbo instead of a supercharger? Just for cost reasons and to learn about turbos? Do you have a manual or auto transmission?

Not many have turbo'ed the 3.4L, but LOTS have added the TRD supercharger. You could get the supercharger for probably $2500 and install it yourself. So that's already over your $1000 figure if you want to minimize costs. With the supercharger if you live lower than 4000-5000(?) feet or plan to go lower than that, you should add some sort of fuel mods, such as the TRD 7th injector or the URD performance kit (www.urdusa.com), which includes larger fuel injectors and the FTC box. Stock fuel injectors aren't large enough for just the supercharger at sea level. You can reasonably expect to spend a total of $4000 for the S/C with quality fuel mods. So if you're just trying to minimize costs and you know what you're doing, maybe you've found a viable option.
