Need a Spot
Been lurking, now asking for advice. Got a D1 Rover and looking to put Isuzu diesel in rather than Rover; parts availability and support mainly. The vehicle weighs in at 4780 lbs with my fat a__ on-board. Which engine, the 4JB1T or 4JG2T would be the better choice? Reliability is the main issue. Thanks for any input.

Richard

I am not very familiar with Land Rovers, but one thing to bear in mind is that with either of those engines you will be limited to using the Isuzu 5-speed diesel transmission (or automatic version of same, if you are so inclined) unless you are willing/able to fabricate your own adapter system. This means that the rear diff must be centered and the front diff must be offset to the passenger side (on a LHD vehicle). Don't know whether this is Rover-friendly or not.

That said, the 2.8l 4JB1-T(C) engines are considered one of the best light-duty truck diesels around, from what I've read. The 4JG2 series is larger, at 3.1l (I believe) but is not direct-injection like the 4JB1 series. I think it is not as highly regarded. You will have to browse around some UK or Australia/New Zealand forums to get more information, as those are markets where people 1) speak English and 2) were able to buy vehicles with these engines.

See the link in my signature, I've got a forum link on my site you might try.

The 4JB1T would be my choice, simply because it's mechanical control and stupidly easy to wire in. Glowplugs will be the hardest part of getting it running.

I have a RRC with the 3.9l 4BD1T, but it's a lot harder to fit in than the 2.8.

If you've got the R380 or ZF gearbox the 4JB1T won't be able to break them. The bigger Isuzu's have too much torque (despite the numbers being similar to the rover V8's).
But there's also plenty of room to fit an Isuzu MSB series gearbox in front of the stock LT230 transfer case if you want to make up some adaptors.
I've got the bigger MSA box and yes it's tight.
