The IFS isn't much weaker than the stock solid axles, if at all, and the steering is actually stronger.

The problem with IFS is that there isn't much on the market to upgrade it, whereas you an build a solid axle Toyota with aftermarket birfs, axles and steering to run just about anything, anywhere.

With that in mind, I would not go taller than 35, but I think 33 is more reasonable and in line with IFS, both in terms of strength and over all capability.

The lack of articulation in the IFS means that it will be very tippy on the trail, so a 33" truck with minimal lift will do far better than a 35" tire with a huge lift, in my experience.

this is an extreemly good point, i have also found it to be true.

when i say "thrashing" i mean pretty much beating the everliving crap out of the rig. getting stuck, rocking the truck out, 5k rpms and catching traction
stuff that most dedicated trail rigs endure.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a '88 4Runner w/ IFS, 2" body lift, Locked rear and open front with 5.29 gears and I run 34" Super Swamper LTB's. I don't plan on locking the front just to prevent breaking things. I've run tough truck, mud bogs, and rock crawl and have had no problems with the IFS. I wheel w/ a few friends that have a cheerokee w/ 6" lift open F/R and the same tires and a TJ w/ 4" lift open F/R w/ the same tires and I can do the same lines they do. Granted w/ the solid front axle the Jeeps get more flex & can posse on a rock better but w/ my locked rear I can make the same lines look easy and cooler w/ a tire in the air. The TJ has broke a few times on the trail and its always been up to me to help fix it and get it out.

Like they say "I understand the Jeep thing thats why I drive a Toyota".
