Getting the Wheeling Fever
I called the local dealer yesterday to get an estimate on adjusting the valves on my 95 T-100 3.4 V6.The service guy says they are not adjustable that only the 4 cyl engines are.I thought I have read somewhere on here that you need special shimms when adjusting the valves. Has anyone had their valves adjusted and how much was the bill for that.

Thanks

dumb dealership. you adjust them with shims. do you have a FSM? i bet it would be quite expensive at the dealer.

Or dumb person answering the phone at the dealership. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" /> You need to call back and talk to someone who knows what the heck they're talking about. Maybe ask to speak to a tech and not just a service writer.

I get flyers in the mail advertising $250 valve adjustments, but I don't know the details. Its a fairly labor-intensive project so I wouldn't be surprised if the total ended up being $4-500. But that's a TON cheaper than having the head(s) rebuilt because you burnt a valve or something.

Since there is already one dumbie on this thread, I'll ask a dumb question, what symptoms would tell you that it's time for a valve adjustment?

Yes, they will get noisy if there is too much clearance. But do you have to worry about too little clearance? That might burn a valve as Eric referred to. As things wear, does the clearance always increase with these engines? Or is there a possibility that clearance might decrease? What's been the experience of those that have adjusted valves?

IIRC, the ones I've had to adjust were exhaust valves that had too little clearance. Seems like the intake valves were almost all ok. I'd have to look at those pages in my manual to be sure though. I know I wrote it all down each time...

What all do you have to remove to get the valve covers off?

Intake manifold?

Yeah this one is FUN. Thanks Erik, added the gaskets to my shopping list.
