Look underneath.

You should see a regular style speedometer cable coming out of the passenger's side of the transfer case. The cable snakes up the passenger side of the transmission tunnel. There are also a few switches. They look like reverse light switches that come on manual transmissions.

There IS an electronic speed sender but it is in the speedometer. It's driven by the speedometer cable and the signal goes to the ECU, cruise, ABS, etc.

If your speedometer and odometer are not working then the cable's broken.

The Haynes manual is better for cleaning up in the bathroom than anything else.
