HI Troops,
I want to replace the stock speakers with 6x9's in the Monty. Was wondering if anyone has done this and if so how many rear plastic panels need to come off? Hopefully it isn't a real PITA.... Thaks for all help.

It is a real PITA, well at least in the 99. I did it and you have to start from the top and work your way down. When i say top, I mean the panel piece strip along the top that goes around the rear cargo light. Then the 3rd row seats have to come out if you have those. The seat belts have to be dropped. I am not done yet. The top panels around the rear cargo windows have to come off. This includes the rubber stripping which is a pain to put back on. The floor strip which is held by 5 screws. Also, if you have the CD changer, that has to get unbolted as well. Finally, I now think you can take off the panels which are actually around the speakers. I might have forgotten something. It is a true PITA.
I don't understand why Mitsubishi didn't make it accessible through the speaker panel, but don't try to rip that off. IT is screwed in from behind and you will tear the plastic.
If you have any trouble with any of the pieces, let me know.
Do not forget to plug in the accessory socket in the drivers side bottom panel. I did and I didn't realize until I was finished putting it all back together. Let me say that I tore up my hand so bad in order to plug it in without taking it all apart again.
Have fun.

I'm about to embark on a similar task.
Lifting the third row seats sure is fun!
Made even more fun by the presence of the rear a/c on the passenger side of the cargo area.
I wonder how much it would have costed Mitsu if they just put in a speaker grille that could actually be popped off without resorting to major surgery.

Hey OTEP,
Good luck with yours as well. Mitsu sure could have saved us a bit of time and effort with a better design. We could probably say that about A LOT of things

Wonder if you could drill out those screws holding the panel on, and then just rig up another way to hold that cover on, or use an aftermarket cover. If my repair work doesn't go too high, I hope to pop in some new speaker in my '92.

Any chance that someone has drilled those rear grilles out successfully? This sounds like the job from

Nice resurrection!
Why would anyone need to drill off the grille? Only reason I can see is to mount speakers, without having to remove the panel...?

That's what he's talking about doing. There's a thread about it over on the Canadian board.
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...
