Yeah it is a big job, takes all of maybe 5-10 minutes to pull an axle. That is counting jacking it up and taking the tire off. You can dink around trying with a hammer or being a contortionist trying to loosen the star wheel or do it the way we have suggested and make it easier on yourself. I know what I would do, pull the axles, but what do I know, I have only been turning wrenches for fifty-four years!!!

Before you go Nuclear on anything, get a can of AeroKroil, pentrating oil spray, and spray a shot on each stud where it comes through the drum. Then gently tap with a hammer on the side of the drum as you pull on it with the other hand. Alternatively use the two bolts in the front of the drum to force it off. Make sure to turn the bolts evenly, say a half a turn each, so you don't get the drum cocked where it binds. Never lost a case yet!

to pull the axle do i have to mess around with the rear diff?? or how does it come out? Nope. To pull the third out, after you pull the axles out Drain the oil Take the four bolts off the D-shaft Remove the nuts on the third Remove the third.

Just undo the brake lines and parking brake, then the 4 bolts(red arrow)on the axle and pull it out of the diff. ![[Linked Image]](http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55/grandeyota/rearbrake.jpg) No reason to mess with the 3rd. Goes back in the same way. Thats pretty much it.

Slide hammer/steering wheel puller/pully puller...... all can be rigged to pull the brake hub off. Question is, is it really stuck, or just hung up on the brake shoes by the wear ridge? A couple of good slams by a sledge might break it free... or if it happens to break the hub, chances are it was worn enough it needed replaced anyhow. If that dont work....try a bigger hammer.
The only problem Ive ever had with brakes locking up was a master cylinder problem.... it would build pressure on a peddle press, but would not release it when taking my foot off the brake peddle. This problem occured on the trail and was a real bear to diagnose and deal with. Ive since added a master cylinder to my spare parts bin.
