On my truck that same area is pretty trashed from years of soda spilling out of cans in the cup holders. Sticky soda and trail dust are a tough combo to get out of the carpet. So, I took a cheap thin rubber floormat (for the back of some vehicle, so it was fairly small) and trimmed it to fit around the shifter boots and between the console and the bench seat and down the sides of the transmission hump. This would cover up your mistake and it's easier to clean than carpet. It looks better than it sounds, especially when touched up with some Armor All.
