Quick tire calculation:

New tire size / old tire size = % of Difference

Example;

265 / 225 = 1.17777 or a 17.8% increase in tire size.

Actually, that math is false. 265 refers to the section width of the tire, not the height. So your math only works if the ratio for both tires is the same (i.e. 265r70 and 225r70) **AND** the wheel size is the same, which we already know to be false (16" vs. 15" stock).

So I still suspect that we're closer to 20%. I made an assumption in my initial estimate that the ratios were the same (as did you) and then added a few percentage points for the wheel height difference...

According to this site Metric tire conversion, if the rim is a 16 the 225's are 29.3, and the 265's are 31.6. This makes the 265's 7.85% bigger, or 15.1mpg rather than 14. If the rim is a 15 the 225's are 28.3, and the 265's are 30.6. This makes the 265's 8.12% bigger, or 15.14mpgs rather than 14. Now if he went from a 225-15 to a 265-16, the difference is 11.66% bigger, or 15.63mpg instaed of 14.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
