Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Hello Again 90 Montero 3.0 MPI. New cap, rotor, plugs, and fuel filter. Wouldn't hit a lick on Sat. Put a new fuel pump and strainer in Sat. afternoon. Ran like a champ until today(Tues.). Tried to strand me a work. Motor spins over fine and I have spark, at least everytime I check it. The only way I can get the thing to start is to rapidly bump the starter 15 or 20 times. Eventually it will hit and die. After it finally hits the first time, it will usually start on the 5th or 6th try after that. I've done all I know to do. I don't have a code reader. I live in the Alaskan bush and don't have alot of resources except for you guys. A member the other day said it could be injectors or my ecu. Any other help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know why it's not starting but I can tell you that no special gear is required to check your ECU codes. Also the check engine light will be lit when you have a code stored. No light, no code.
Of course this doesn't rule out if the ECU is bad.
If you do have a code/check engine light then you'll need to know what the codes are in order to check them. I recall the codes were posted before. You may want to search for "+ECU +Codes" (remove the quotes) in either this forum or the Mitsu Technical Archives. If you don't find it right away & no-one posts it up for you, then I can post them up later tomorrow for you.
HTH.

Yes, my check engine light is on. I have part of a manual that tells me how to check codes with an analog ammeter. That is what I'm trying to do now. That is all I have to check the codes.

Okay, Where is the diagnosis terminal? The manual I'm looking at says it is in the glove box compartment. I don't see anything hanging loose.

My Hayes manual says that the data link terminal is on the drivers side near the fuse box. I can't find it there either. Will it be connected to something or just hanging loose?

IIRC it's either behind the glove box or underneath it but perhaps someone who has access to their FSM can chime in. Oh and as for the Haynes Manual, use it for kindling the next time your start a fire. That's about all that book seems to be good for. It's also bad for giving misleading info.

The terminal is behind the glove box. You will probably want to take the box out, or at least pop the two hooks on the side of the box out and let it hang down. I think it is green, but I'm not 100% on that. If you still cannot find it, post up and I will go out to the parking lot and look at mine ('89, shouldn't be different).
I'll be interested to see what the codes are. I wonder if you just had a bad replacement pump? I'd suspect this since it ran so well after replacement...

Thanks Eric. Yeah I pulled the glove box out, but didn't know what I was looking for. Will it be plugged into something or have a cap over it? I'm at work, will be a while before I can go take another look for it. I finally got the rig home last night. Sat for 3 hrs before I could get back to it. Didn't want to start again, so I tapped on the relay??? that is at the passengers right foot just above the floor. It started right up. Maybe coincidence? Went out this morning and it started right up(as good as could be expected) at -14F with no heat on the engine. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> Ran fine all the way to work. jeff

OK, just went out and looked... It's behind the glove box, on the right hand side up near the top. Should be a white connector with 3 wires going into it (note that the connector has room for many more pins, but only 3 are used). Mine was tucked in on top of the wire loom, so just keep looking -- it's there <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Sounds like you were tapping on the MPI control relay? If you've got a dying control relay this could also generate the symptoms you're seeing. According to the FSM "NOTE Failure of the control relay prevents power supply to the fuel pump, injectors, engine control unit, resulting in start failure".
If you've only got a Haynes manual, you might wish to avail yourself of some the scans our Russian friends have on the recently-discussed website, specifically the "mpi-system.pdf" document <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
Good luck! Let me know if there's any other info I can provide...

Sounds like a CPU problem. Have you pulled it and checked for leaking capacitors? It's under the glove compartment.
