While just using regular wire will work, I wouldn't recommend it. Fusible links are more heavily insulated to that when they go, they have less of a chance of burning through the insulation and causing a bigger problem. I can't say for sure, but I'm willing to bet that it's just 14ga fusible link wire. ANY auto parts (at least that are worth anything) should have that. You gotta remember that the wire you have right now might look like 12ga wire, but it's also got an extra thick jacket on it, so it's probably 14ga or maybe even 16ga.

I know you're just joking on this, but paper clip is a BIG no no. That'd just be begging for an electrical fire.
