On idles and on Gas mileage being better.

The automatic transmission 22re requires an 850 RPM idle. The EFI trucks surge if the idle is too high, but 850 is not a problem.

I would suggest that people experience better mileage only because they have fixed a worn out top end (possibly bottoms too) and are experiencing what the vehicles got when they were new. My 89 auto with all the sensors working and in tune can get (and has) 23 at 70 mph of I am not driving into the wind. These trucks were made when the speed limit was 55, so its not surprising that they get the highway speeds written on the EPA listing when you drive 60MPH.

Prior to rebuild It idled 750 just fine with the automatic transmission. it lopes around to much with 750.

At any rate, after fooling with it for a while my friend is veryhappy with the performance.

Body Damage is Cool
There's something important to remember about jumpering the connector to set base ignition timing. That being the computer will ignore you if there are error codes.

So if the ignition timing doesn't change when you jumper the connector, you've got a component problem to fix.

Conveniently, that connector is also a diagnostics connector. Jumper it with the engine not running, and you can read error codes, via the check engine light as I recall. You will probably find it telling you there is a problem with the TPS.

Another entertaining trait of the 22RE engine is the tendancy to have a surging idle if the cooling system is low.

Try setting the timing to 12* without the check connector jumpered, at about 850 rpm...

Just might do the trick for you!
